Wow-Wee Wolfwhistle
9 September, 2013
Blue blood Wolfwhistle (3 c O'Reilly - Legs, by Pins) was given a beautiful ride by Matt Cameron to run out a convincing winner of the Rotorua Hunt Raceday 1300 metres on Sept. 9 at Taupo.
His dam, Legs (Pins - River Century, by Centaine), was Joint top filly on the 2005-06 NZ 3YO Free Handicaps. Legs recorded Group One wins in the New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and Kelt Capital Stakes (2040m), also won the Eulogy Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) and finished second in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) in a career of five wins from twelve starts, and stakes of $875,428.
Purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis for $240,000 at the 2012 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, from the draft of Waikato Stud, Wolfwhistle had made good ground for third when resuming over 1200 metres at the same venue on Aug. 19 and appreciated the extra yardage.
Following a seamless trip eighth, Wolfwhistle received a perfect drag into proceedings from the 600 metres and for a big horse - good on his feet - he balanced up quickly in the straight before bounding to a handy advantage at the 200 metres and exhibited a lovely action in his run to the line.
“That was really good,†said jockey Matt Cameron. “He settled nicely, popped off when he needed to and had momentum coming down the hill [to the straight entrance] and was too good for them. He gave me a really good feel.
Now a winner at his third start for the Te Akau Wolfwhistle Syndicate, Wolfwhistle could look to raise the bar when contesting the Hawkes Bay Guineas (Gr. 2, 1400m) on Oct. 5 at Hastings.
“We'll see how he comes through this race, but I think he will go to a stakes race for three-year-olds - put him in the deep end,†said trainer Jason Bridgman. “He's got the manners to handle it and against town hall company will give us a good line on the horse.
“He had to edge forward to get into contention from the 700 metres, but on a bigger track we will be able to hold him a bit longer.
Of Wolfwhistle, Bridgman had said previously that he has a magic temperament and lovely manners, and added: “he's just such a nice horse and he has considerable talentâ€.
At the time of his purchase, Waikato Stud boss Mark Chittick had said of Wolfwhistle: “He was one of the best colts in our draft and one at great value, too. “He's a very good product out of a very good mare and he's a racehorse.â€
