A colt offering outstanding value from a deep and proven New Zealand family, Lot 108 is a bay colt by Derryn out of the accomplished racemare Secret Spirit, purchased for $100,000 from Grangewilliam Stud.

This colt is bred to be tough, genuine and versatile, descending from a phenomenal family of winners that includes Wellington Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m) winner Daria’s Fun, a 12-time winner, and New Zealand Cup (Gr. 2, 3200m) winner Waltermitty. It is a family long admired for producing sound horses capable of performing across distances and training on with maturity.

The sire Derryn (by Hinchinbrook) has quickly proven himself as a stallion capable of producing elite performers. He is the sire of New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Leica Lucy, who dominated her three-year-old season, winning six of seven starts including the New Zealand Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m). Derryn is also the sire of Doctor Askar, the recent winner of the Thorndon Mile (Gr. 1, 1600m), a horse who continues to improve as he matures — a trait strongly associated with Derryn’s stock.

The colt’s dam Secret Spirit, by the durable sire Swiss Ace, was herself a high-class race filly. A stakes-winning two-year-old, she claimed the Great Northern Foal Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m) before training on at three to add further black type with victories in the O’Leary’s Fillies Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and the Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr. 3, 1400m).

Further strength lies in the third dam Dastaria, an impressive middle-distance winner who scored four times up to 2100m and later excelled as a broodmare, producing five individual winners for a total of 29 wins, underlining the consistency and depth of this maternal line.

Te Akau principal David Ellis was particularly taken by the colt’s physical presence and temperament.

“He’s from a great farm and breeder at Grangewilliam Stud. Their horses are very natural, have great temperaments, and they’ve produced a really good-bodied colt here,” Ellis said.
