Yearling Spotlight: Lot 206 Pinatubo – Darook Park Colt
18 February, 2026
Dreaming of international class with proven Kiwi depth? Introducing Lot 206 Pinatubo (IRE) – Darook Park (AUS) | Bay or Brown Colt | $120,000.
Purchased for outstanding value at the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from Hidden Valley Thoroughbreds, this colt is by exceptional European Champion Two-Year-Old Pinatubo and from a family Te Akau knows intimately. Born on 6 October 2024, he is an athletic, beautifully balanced colt with strength and scope, and 55% remains available.
Pinatubo, a son of Shamardal, was unbeaten in six starts at two, including Group One victories in the National Stakes (1400m) and the Dewhurst Stakes (1400m) — one of the most influential stallion-making races in the world. He retired as Europe’s Champion Two-Year-Old and commenced stud duties in 2021, earning Timeform Leading First Season Sire honours in Europe. With his oldest progeny now three-year-olds, he has already sired more than 70 individual winners and multiple stakes performers. His stock has been in high demand, with colts selling for $700,000 at Magic Millions last year and up to $600,000 earlier in this sale.
The colt’s dam, Darook Park, is a proven producer with three individual winners, including dual Group Three-winning sprinter Finance Tycoon. She is by Darci Brahma — a name synonymous with Te Akau. Purchased as a yearling by David Ellis and trained by Mark Walker to win five Group One races, Darci Brahma later became a Champion Sire and played a pivotal role in putting Te Akau on the map.
Importantly, Darook Park is a half-sister to the high-class two-year-old Silk Pins, runner-up in the Karaka Million 2YO and recognised as Second Top Filly on the NZ Free Handicaps. The second dam Silk Ending produced multiple winners, reinforcing the depth and consistency of this female line. It is a family that has consistently delivered speed, precocity and durability.
The pedigree is further strengthened by the influential Mr. Prospector cross, one of the most important sire lines in thoroughbred history, adding another layer of class and international appeal.
Te Akau principal David Ellis was particularly impressed by the colt’s overall athleticism and the strength of the family.
“It’s a really talented and versatile family, which we know very well. With the dam a half-sister to Silk Pins, we understand the class in the dam line — that’s a huge help,” Ellis said.
“Darci Brahma’s influence in the pedigree is significant for Te Akau, and trainers in Australia hold Pinatubo’s progeny in very high regard.
“He has the makings of a sharp two-year-old, but also a colt we believe will train on as a three and four-year-old. He’s athletic, beautifully prepared, and has a lot going for him.”
With elite European juvenile brilliance, a proven Australasian dam line, and genuine Magic Millions appeal, Lot 206 offers owners the opportunity to race a colt bred to be competitive early — and continue improving with maturity.
