Yearling Spotlight: Lot 347 Spirit of Boom – Chenzel Colt

11 February, 2026

Dreaming of speed with depth? Introducing Lot 347 Spirit of Boom (AUS) – Chenzel (NZ) | Bay Colt | $100,000.

A colt combining proven Australian speed with a deep, elite New Zealand female family, Lot 347 is a bay colt by four-time Champion Sire Spirit of Boom out of the Snitzel mare Chenzel, purchased for $100,000 from Landsdowne Park. Born on 26 August 2024, he is a well-balanced, athletic colt with scope to develop, and 65% remains available.

Spirit of Boom has established himself as one of the most reliable stallions in the Southern Hemisphere. A four-time Champion Sire and Leading First Season Sire by winners in Australia, he has produced more than 500 individual winners, over 1,500 race wins, and 48 stakes winners. Renowned for imparting speed, soundness and competitiveness, Spirit of Boom has also topped the sires’ tables as Leading Sire of Two-Year-Old Winners and Stakes Winners, consistently producing horses that come early and train on.

This colt is the first foal out of Chenzel, a smart Australian winner over 1400 metres by four-time Champion Sire Snitzel, who continues to rise as a broodmare sire of major influence. Snitzel finished third on the Australian Broodmare Sires’ List last season and is closing in on 50 individual stakes winners in that role, underlining the strength and commercial appeal of this dam line.

The pedigree is anchored by a high-class second dam in Chenille (NZ), a Group One winner and a mare fondly remembered by New Zealand racegoers. Chenille was a nine-time winner from 1600m to 3200m, combining stamina with a sharp turn of foot. Her career highlights included victories in the Hawke’s Bay Cup (Listed, 2200m) and the Auckland Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m), marking her as a mare of genuine quality and versatility.

Chenille is a half-sister to Chintz (NZ), a Group Two and Group Three winner who went on to produce the outstanding Group Two-winning two-year-old Not An Option, further reinforcing the depth and consistency of this family. The strength continues deeper into the pedigree through Seraphic (NZ), a Group Three winner and Group One-placed mare whose descendants include Group Two winners Irlanda and Mo’unga, as well as stakes-winning juvenile Super Photon.

Te Akau principal David Ellis was particularly taken by the colt’s physical makeup and overall profile.

“He’s a beautiful example of the mating, with plenty of input from Spirit of Boom and Snitzel in his makeup, and also the rein and scope of Chenille, who we got to know so well when she raced in New Zealand,” Ellis said.

“He’s been well prepared, has a great temperament, is a very relaxed individual, and looks as though he has the precocity to come early and certainly train on at three, four and five.”

With his proven speed influence, elite female family and a pedigree that blends Australian precocity with New Zealand depth, this colt offers owners an exciting opportunity to race a horse bred to perform early and progress through the grades.
