Introducing Lot 499 Dundeel (NZ) - Luna Mia (AUS) Bay Colt - Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale 2026 | $170,000
When a colt is bred on a cross proven at the very highest level, backed by elite race performance and a pedigree saturated in global influence, he immediately commands attention.
That’s exactly what Te Akau has secured in Lot 499.
Introducing a striking bay colt by the outstanding Dundeel, out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Luna Mia — a colt that combines Classic staying power, proven sire lines, and a pedigree built for success on both sides of the Tasman.
Purchased by David Ellis CNZM for $170,000 from the renowned Arrowfield Stud draft, this colt represents exceptional value and an exciting opportunity to be involved in a horse bred to compete at the highest level.
Dundeel was a racehorse of rare class. A six-time Group One winner, he dominated across New Zealand and Australia — winning the Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) by six lengths on the bridle and finishing his career with victory in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m). He was crowned Champion Three-Year-Old and Horse of the Year in New Zealand, and Champion Middle Distance Horse in Australia.
At stud, his impact continues to grow. Dundeel progeny have now recorded over 1300 wins, including 78 stakes victories, and he is already proving a sire of sires through horses like Super Seth — Champion First and Second Season Sire in New Zealand.
Importantly, this colt is out of a mare by Redoute’s Choice, one of the most influential broodmare sires in the modern era. The Dundeel / Redoute’s Choice cross has already produced elite performers, including Super Seth and dual Group One winner Celestial Legend — a powerful endorsement of the pedigree strength behind this colt.
The dam, Luna Mia, was a four-time winner up to 1400 metres and has already left a smart debut winner in Quickaz, indicating early signs of her producing ability.
The depth of the family adds further appeal.
The granddam Luna Bella, by Stravinsky, is a sister to Group Two winner Hips Don’t Lie — herself the dam of Acrobat, a stakes-winning juvenile and now a promising young sire. This is also the extended family of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Learning To Fly, underlining the class and precocity that runs through the page.
Stravinsky’s influence as a broodmare sire is well established globally, with elite performers such as Lankan Rupee, Rip Van Winkle, and Russian Revolution emerging from his daughters.
Commenting on the purchase, David Ellis CNZM was particularly taken by both the colt’s physique and pedigree.
“He’s a good moving colt, with an outstanding pedigree, and really looks a three-year-old Classics type horse,” Ellis said.
“We have enormous respect for both the sire Dundeel, and of course you cannot get much better than having Redoute’s Choice as the dam sire.
“It’s a really good family, with plenty of black type performers, including the promising sire Acrobat.
“He’s been beautifully prepared for sale by Arrowfield Stud, where Dundeel stands, and there is a lot of quality in this colt for the price we paid.”
Adding further strength to his genetic profile, the colt carries influential duplications of Northern Dancer, along with Nureyev and the legendary “blue hen” mare Special — a foundation of some of the most successful bloodlines in the modern thoroughbred.
Born 16 October 2024, this colt has the scope, pedigree, and presence to develop into a high-class three-year-old and beyond.
