Yearling Spotlight: Lucky Vega (IRE) – Twisted Reality (Fastnet Rock) Bay Filly

Our Spotlight on Yearlings series continues this week with one of the standout fillies from our 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchases – the exciting Lucky Vega – Twisted Reality (Fastnet Rock) filly.
Purchased by Sir David Ellis for A$270,000 from the Yulong Stud draft, the daughter of exciting young sire Lucky Vega has recently completed her first educational preparation at Te Akau's Matamata stable and has already left a lasting impression on the team.
After being broken in, she progressed through to a jump out on 14 May before returning to Te Akau Stud for a four-week spell. A strong, athletic filly with plenty of natural strength, she handled every aspect of her education with maturity and confidence and is due back in the stable to begin preparations towards an early trial next season.

Assistant trainer Reece Trumper, who has been closely involved in Te Akau's yearling selection process over the past three years, couldn't have been happier with what he saw.
"She's a very nice filly out of a Fastnet Rock mare, and she's built like one of them and we know how well they work.
"She's a good-sized filly, good strong barrel, great hindquarter, and the riders really liked her.
"She's certainly got the early physical development and strength and looks like a filly that will run early.
"She's got a lot of Fastnet Rock about her makeup. He's an incredible Champion Broodmare Sire and we like seeing him in the pedigree."
The filly boasts an outstanding international pedigree. Her sire, Lucky Vega, is a shuttle stallion between Yulong Stud in New South Wales and the Irish National Stud. A Group One winner and twice Group One placed in Europe, he was a high-class two-year-old described by his trainer as both good-looking and highly intelligent.
Lucky Vega is by outstanding stallion Lope de Vega (Shamardal), winner of both the French 2000 Guineas and French Derby, who has established himself as one of the world's leading sires while also proving to be an emerging sire of sires.
With his oldest crop now three-year-olds, Lucky Vega is already making an impact. His exciting daughter Within The Law won the Inglis 2YO Stakes (Listed) on debut before adding the Nursery Stakes (Listed) and the Embrace Stakes (Gr. 2), while in New Zealand he is represented by dual Group winner That's Gold, winner of both the Avondale Guineas (Gr. 2) and Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr. 3).
Te Akau has also enjoyed immediate success with the young stallion, with Lucky Single producing an impressive second-up victory from the Cranbourne stable in Melbourne after finishing second on debut.
From an outstanding international female family, dam Twisted Reality was a two-year-old winner over 1600 metres in England and is a daughter of Champion broodmare sire Fastnet Rock, whose influence continues to grow with more than 150 stakes winners produced from his daughters.
Twisted Reality is a half-sister to three winners, including multiple Group and Listed placegetter Saint George (Roaring Lion), while this filly is her first foal. Granddam Lady Dragon is by the legendary 12-time Champion Sire Galileo (Sadler's Wells), while third dam Spinola (Spinning World) produced Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Dorcia (Henrythenavigator), giving the filly a pedigree rich in proven international class.
Speaking after securing the filly at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Sir David Ellis CNZM believed she possessed all the qualities he looks for in a future racehorse.
"She's a beautiful loose-walking filly, typical of the breed, by a really exciting young sire and with a dam line featuring the best blood in the world through Galileo.
"Fastnet Rock is a sire that Te Akau has experienced a lot of success with and he has risen to the top as a broodmare sire as well, with over 150 stakes winners, so it's a big factor in her pedigree.
"She has the looks of furnishing into an outstanding physical specimen, has a faultless temperament, behaved beautifully on the sale grounds and in the ring, and has an enormous amount of quality.
"The pedigree suggests she has the natural precocity to race as a two-year-old, and she has all the right attributes to train on as she matures."
Adding further appeal, the filly carries a beautifully balanced cross of Danzig (Northern Dancer) through both the sire line of Lucky Vega and the dam line of Twisted Reality via Danehill.
Interestingly, Lucky Vega's sire Lope de Vega was also highly regarded by respected UK form analyst and professional punter Patrick Veitch. Recognising the stallion as an undervalued influence early in his career, Veitch began purchasing his progeny from the 2017 yearling sales.
Applying his renowned mathematical approach to bloodstock selection, seven yearlings he purchased went on to win eight Group and Listed races, further underlining the quality emerging from the sire line.
