Yourpoint on Point

In the colours of Champion Two-Year-Old Yourdeel (Dundeel), Yourpoint (2 g Bull Point - Dollhouse, by Snitzel) towelled his rivals on debut in the $10,000 Maiden 2YO 1200 metres on 28 December at Matamata.

“He's similar in some respects to Yourdeel,” said trainer Jamie Richards. “Both are laidback and a bit tricky, so they were gelded to get their minds on the job. Yourpoint probably has a bit more scope and not quite as mature at the same stage, but in respect to Opie (Bosson) having to motivate them to get them going they're very similar.”

Richards did a terrific job with Yourdeel throughout his two-year-old season, from waltzing away to win on debut to winning both the Sistema Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) and Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m), scoring by six lengths in the Matamata Slipper (Gr. 3, 1200m) and finishing third to stable-mate Probabeel (Savabeel) in the Karaka Million (Restricted Listed, 1200m).

Similarly owned by Chris Rutten, John Norwood and Rod Preston, Yourpoint had trialled well for first, second, and third, respectively. Not rushed off an awkward gate (7) to settle three back on the outer, he quickened to lead at the 200m when asked to extend by Bosson and showed a good action drawing clear to score by and two and a quarter lengths.

“He's a funny horse and a little bit on and off,” Bosson said. “Once I balanced him up in the straight and gave him a couple of light reminders, he really wound up. We've got the first win out of the way and I'm pretty sure he'll go on with it.”

After a good gallop was set up in front, Yourpoint ran the 1200 metres in 1:10.8 on Dead5 footing and returned $3.30 & $1.90 on the TAB tote, in the race sponsored by Cunningham Decorating Services.

Having won the Karaka Million for the past three years, with Melody Belle (Commands), Avantage (Fastnet Rock), and Probabeel, Yourpoint will attempt to join stable-mates Bordeaux le Rouge (Burgundy) and Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel), with a chance to boost his earnings in the $22,500 2YO 1200 metres on 12 January at Ellerslie.

“When he's got his mind on the job he's well above average and hopefully we can hold him together for the big race at the end of January,” said Richards, referring to the Karaka Million on Jan. 25.

“He'll probably require more prize money, so we'll have to go again at Ellerslie in the middle of January. He's going well and we've got to give him the opportunity. But, whatever he does he's going to continue to get better.

“He's another really nice horse to have in the stable for Chris Rutten, John Norwood and Rod Preston, and I can't thank them enough for their support.”

By a son of Champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill), his dam Dollhouse, by Snitzel (Redoute's Choice), won three races to 1200 metres in Australia, from the family of NZ Breeders' Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Rockabubble (Bubble Gum Fellow).

Through his sire line, Yourpoint carries a lovely cross off Danehill (Danzig). Danehill, the most successful sire of all time with 349 stakes' winners, is the sire of Fastnet Rock and grandsire of Snitzel, through Redoute's Choice.

Yourpoint was strapped by Mason Stevens.
