Assistant Trainer and Administration – SINGAPORE
After a successful riding career, Gus became a professional trainer in his own right (training the Group One winning filly of the year Lady Agnes) and he joined the Te Akau as Stable Manager at the Rangiora stables in August 2002. In January 2011, Gus transferred to Te Akau Singapore where he now is the assistant trainer to Mark Walker. He enjoys the racing in Singapore and being part of the Te Akau team. Gus particularly enjoys the conditioning side of training and when he was based at Rangiora horses the calibre of King’s Chapel, Maroofity, Darci Brahma, Shikoba, Princess Coup and King’s Rose graced the stable during their illustrious careers and flourished under his watchful eye. Gus has no favourite horses, he likes them all. Gus and his wife Karen, who is also an important part of Te Akau Singapore, have been valuable team members for 15 years. They both come from racing families in the South Island and have always felt privileged to have the opportunity to work with the horses and mix and meet the wonderfully hard-working people associated in the industry. Karen assists in the administration side of things, gets the chance to work with the horses most afternoons and enjoys being part of the team.
