Gold Coast Yearling Sale 2020 – Lot 105 Xtravagant (NZ) – Avail (AUS) Bay Filly

Lot 105 bay or brown filly Xtravagant – Avail (Exceed and Excel) $70,000 (draft: Newhaven Park)

A filly from the first crop by Xtravagant (Pentire), who was trained by Te Akau to win the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 2000m) in breathtaking fashion by eight and a half lengths. In the process, he ran the mile in a staggering 1:33.59, last 600m in 33.04, to establish a new race record and became the fifth of six 2000 Guineas winners for Te Akau. He now stands at Newhaven Park, N.S.W., in Australia.

Owned by the 2014 Te Akau Breeding Syndicate, Xtravagant was purchased as a yearling by David Ellis for $375,000 at the 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale, from the draft of Rich Hill Stud.

“He was rated one of the nicest colts ever produced for sale by Rich Hill and after winning a great stallion producing race (2000 Guineas) he now stands in Australia,” Ellis said.

“I’ve been thrilled by the athleticism and quality of his yearlings in the sale and I know the family of this filly really well.”

Ellis bought a half-brother to the filly, Total Excess (Delago Deluxe), for $200,000 at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale. He was a debut winning two-year-old that won his next start fresh-up at three and subsequently sold to Hong Kong.

“It’s a very good quality family that was established by the Murfitt family at Riccarton Stud in Christchurch. I also bought Exabelle, an absolutely beautiful mare that won races for us, out of the grand-dam of this filly, Avabelle (Zabeel).

“The third dam in the family, Eye Full, by Palatable, who stood at Riccarton Stud, won 11 races including the Hawkes Bay Cup (Gr. 3, 2200m) and she left Group One winner Gaze (Cape Cross) who won eight.”

Xtravagant is from an unraced Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare and his grand-dam is multiple stakes performer Arletty (Centaine). She won eight of her twenty-nine starts, including the Wilkinson Mile (Gr. 3, 1600m) and Ra Ora Stakes (Gr. 3, 2000m) at Ellerslie, the Villiers Stakes (Gr. 2, 1600m) at Randwick, and the Queen of the Turf (Gr. 2, 1500m) at Rosehill.

“Xtravagant is from a great family and I think he’ll develop into a really good sire,” Ellis said. “He’s got some super yearlings in the sale, that a lot of good judges like, and I inspected his yearlings with John Thompson (Rich Hill Stud) who bred him.”

The filly sports a beautiful Zabeel (Sir Tristram) cross in her pedigree, through the dam lines of both Xtravagant and Avail.
