Lot 375 brown filly Xtravagant – Herstory (Commands) $270,000 (draft: Newhaven Park)
A filly from the first crop by Xtravagant (Pentire), who was trained by Te Akau to win the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 2000m) in breathtaking fashion by eight and a half lengths. In the process, he ran the mile in a staggering 1:33.59, last 600m in 33.04, to establish a new race record and became the fifth of six 2000 Guineas winners for Te Akau. He now stands at Newhaven Park, N.S.W., in Australia.
Owned by the 2014 Te Akau Breeding Syndicate, Xtravagant was purchased as a yearling by David Ellis for $375,000 at the 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale, from the draft of Rich Hill Stud.
“He was rated one of the nicest colts ever produced for sale by Rich Hill and after winning a great stallion producing race (2000 Guineas) he now stands in Australia,” Ellis said.
“Along with a lot of very good judges, I’ve been overwhelmed with the quality of his first crop progeny that are here at the sale and with our firsthand knowledge of him it’s fantastic being able to buy some of his progeny to bring home.
“Xtravagant is from an outstanding family, showed immense ability on the race track, and given what I’ve seen of his yearlings I’m predicting that he’ll be a hugely successful sire.”
The dam of the filly, Herstory won three races to 1400 metres in Australia, including a debut victory over 1200 metres as a two-year-old. She is by Danehill stallion Commands, the sire of reigning Horse of the Year and Te Akau star Melody Belle (ex. Meleka Belle, by Iffraaj).
“She’s the second foal from the mare,” Ellis said. “An early foal like Melody Belle, and we’ve had so much success buying first or early foals from good pedigree mares like this.”
The filly has an uncluttered pedigree and carries a simple cross of immortal sire Northern Dancer.
