Description

Lot 212 bay filly Lonhro – Rasa Lila (Darci Brahma) $175,000 (draft: Pencarrow Stud)

Unlucky not to win a Group One, Rasa Lila impressed regularly over 1600m and up to 2000m and numbered Group Two and Three wins among seven race victories. By Champion Sire Darci Brahma (Danehill), bought by David Ellis as a yearling and went on to win five Group Ones, Rasa Lila is from a terrific Pencarrow family.

Leon Casey (Pencarrow Stud) said: “She’s a very correct and well balanced filly. By a proven sire of fillies and I think that family has become one of our strongest. She’s been a great buy and she’s got a great future.

“We were very pleased with her as a first foal from the mare, being very correct and very tidy filly.

“Rasa Lila was desperately unlucky not to have won a Group One. She was placed three times and did everything but win one. She won the Cuddle Stakes (Gr. 3, 1600m) very easily, Travis Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) the same. And when you read back through that pedigree it’s one of the most underrated pages in the catalogue.”

Her sire, Lonhro (Octagonal), was Champion Three-Year-Old, Champion Miler, Horse of the Year, and a simply outstanding Australian racehorse that won 11 Group One races.

He is flying as a stallion at present, with the likes of Blue Diamond (Gr. 1, 1200m) winner Lyre, VRC Oaks (Gr. 1, 2500m) winner Aristia, and as a sire of sires with sons Pierro, Impending, Encryption, and Denman.

“A beautiful filly and a cracking first foal from the mare,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis. “She was a great mare and genuine at weight-for-age level. She has a lovely head, neat and tidy and just a lovely all-round package when you take into account her pedigree as well.

“She’s a filly with plenty of class and on type looks like she might come a bit sooner than some in the family.

“Lonhro is an out and out Champion stallion and she’s got a double of Zabeel. We were thrilled to buy her.”

The filly carries a Zabeel (Sir Tristram) cross through Octagonal, the sire of Lonhro, and as the dam-sire of Grand Echezeaux, the dam of Darci Brahma.
