Lot 85 brown filly Savabeel – Matakana (Mastercraftsman) $145,000 (draft: Little Avondale Stud)
From a family that has produced some really good racehorses, she is by five-time Champion Sire Savabeel (Zabeel) from a young mare by successful sire Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer), who is the dam sire of Group One and Group Three winner Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible).
Sam Williams (Little Avondale Stud) said: “She’s a lovely, big, strong Savabeel filly. She’s got a great attitude and constitution, produced by a breeder (Christopher Grace) that has had a lot of success with Savabeel and produced a lot of black type horses.
“She’s a real miler to mile and a half (2400m) filly on type and typically the family just continues to improve with time.”
The filly has a beautiful cross of legendary stallion Sir Tristram, on the sire line as the sire of Zabeel and the dam line of Matakana as the sire of third dam sire Grosvenor.
“She’s an absolute ripper, out of a Mastercraftsman mare that was good enough to finish fourth in the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m),” said Te Akau principal David Ellis. “Unfortunately, she hurt herself after that and never raced again.
“She’s a well grown filly, good type, walks beautifully, and we think she’s the sort to win a race in the autumn as a two-year-old and train on to be a 1000 Guineas filly.
“She’s out of a nice young mare, from a family we’ve had a bit of success with. She’s got a great attitude and paraded very well.
“She was a must have. We come here to try and buy these Savabeel’s and we’re thrilled to have bought her.”
