KARAKA – Lot 118 Belardo (IRE) – Silke Top (GB), Bay Colt

Lot 118 bay colt Belardo – Silke Top (Librettist) $40,000 (draft: Valachi Downs)

Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards provided the first NZ success for Belardo (Lope de Vega) when Avonallo won the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on New Zealand Cup Day at Riccarton, and subsequently finished third in the Karaka Million 2YO (Restricted Listed, 1200m) – won by stable-mate On the Bubbles (Brazen Beau).

Last year at Karaka, the colt by Vadamos out of Silke Top made $185,000, and the both stem from this terrific family.

Grand-dam Zaza Top (Lomitas) was the Second Top filly on the German 2YO Handicaps and doing a really good job at stud, having already left Champion 3YO in Germany Zazou (Shamardal), and Zoe Dream (Galileo), winner of seven from 2300m to 4050m in France. She has  also left NZ Group 3 placed Za Za Gabor (O’Reilly).

“He was one of the value buys of the sale for us,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM. “He’s got a really nice international pedigree and by a sire that we’ve already experience success with.

“Like Avonallo, we expect he has the precocity to be ready to race as a two-year-old. The sire is doing a really good job as a young stallion and has produced some lovely strong and athletic types.

“She’s from a nice young mare, a good mover, and as I said: very good value.”
