Lot 239 bay colt Contributer – Alpha Dame (O’Reilly) $135,000 (draft: Mapperley Stud)
World-class racehorse High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) was a sire sensation when crossed with New Zealand mares, producing a trifecta in the Australian Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) with his first crop. He has since become an incredible sire in Australia, and in turn a hugely successful sire of sires.
Sire son Contributer, too, has commenced his stallion career with distinction, producing some cracking young performers in both New Zealand and Australia, none more so that the Te Akau trained filly Campionessa, the winner of two from two, and like this colt she out of a mare by O’Reilly (Last Tycoon).
Australian Middle Distance Horse of the Year Contributer (High Chaparral) was a dual Group One winner of the Chipping Norton (Gr. 1, 1600m) and Ranvet Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m). His sire, High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells), winner of six Group 1 races including the English and Irish Derbies, has sired 16 individual Group One winners of 33 races internationally and already a noted sire of sires.
“He is out a nice young mare by Champion sire O’Reilly and from a really good family of Mapperley Stud,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM.
“We have been very impressed by the progeny of Contributer, and have some talented individuals by him in the stable. This colt is a really good sort, medium-sized, correct, walked well, and we think he is the type to race as an autumn two-year-old.
“There is quite a bit of speed in the family and this colt has the scope to train on as a three-year-old classic miler and Derby sort.”
