Lot 308 chestnut colt Almanzor – Champagne Katie (Darci Brahma) $230,000 (draft: Wentwood Grange)
By one of the best credentialed stallions to shuttle to New Zealand in the last decade, Almanzor (Wotton Bassett) was European Champion Three-Year-Old and claimed the same titles in Ireland and France.
He is from dual winning and stakes performed mare Champagne Katie, by Champion five-time Group One winning sire Darci Brahma (Danehill), bought as a yearling by David Ellis at Karaka.
“He’s a strong chestnut coloured colt, very athletic and a natural running type,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM.
“Out of a young Darci Brahma mare, she has not had a lot of luck at stud, losing her first two progeny, but we bought the half-sister, Madame Moet, by Iffraaj, as a yearling at the sales two years ago and Jamie (Richards) likes her as a chance to win races. She was consistent through the trials stage and two fourths so far at the races.
“He’s a beautiful physical specimen, with a great walk, and really exciting 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) type colt.”
