KARAKA – Lot 342 Caravaggio (USA) – Dark and Stormy (NZ), Bay Colt

Lot 342 bay colt Caravaggio – Dark And Stormy (Zabeel) $85,000 (draft: Pencarrow Stud)

A colt from a mare by Champion Sire and Champion Broodmare Sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram), a quality influence in the pedigree of any horse that cannot be underestimated – and in many instances cannot be beaten.

Caravaggio, a fast racehorse, winning four races as a two-year-old, and Joint Champion 3YO Sprinter in Ireland, is a son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg), the grand-sire of Te Akau star young sprinter Need I Say More, by No Nay Never. Scat Daddy also sired 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, and was a sad loss to the international stallion ranks when dying after serving only a few crops.

Dark And Stormy won two races to 1600 metres, and this is her first foal.

“We followed the racing career of Dark And Stormy closely,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM. “She was a promising mare that unfortunately had her career curtailed by injury.

“It’s a great family. The grand-dam, Floridita, won as a two-year-old, and the family has left quite a few winning two-year-olds.

“Some heavy-hitters feature in the family, including Champion 2YO Filly in Europe, Maybe (Galileo), and English 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact). And, we really like the influence that Scat Daddy has had around the world.

“He’s a really nice type and strikes us as a Karaka Million type colt. He was great value at the price.”
