Lot 367 bay colt Tavistock – Echezeaux (Encosta de Lago) $520,000 (draft: Pencarrow Stud)
Tavistock (Montjeu), a noted sire of (four) Derby winners, has added terrific quality to the New Zealand stallion ranks, producing robust and hardy horses with tough qualities and the ability to accelerate, or quicken, at the business end, for which he was heralded as a dual Group One winning racehorse.
Te Akau has had more experience with this family than anyone else, as not only did they train the dam, Echezeaux, a stakes placed winner of four races from 1600m – 2100m, but David Ellis also bought, and Te Akau trained, both five-time Group One winning Champion Sire Darci Brahma (Danehill), and five-time stakes winning stallion Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice).
Regarded as a Blue Hen mare, the highest accolade afforded to broodmares, grand-dam Grand Echezeaux is the dam of stallions Darci Brahma (Danehill), Saperavi (Stravinsky) and Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice), from a line that produced Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal (Rhythm) to win $6 million in stakes and the pride and joy of owner and breeder Sir Peter Vela.
“He’s an outstanding colt and out of a mare that we trained for Sir Peter (Vela),” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM. “She was above average and good enough to gain black type in the Marton Cup.
“He’s a shorter, sharper, and neater type of Tavistock and we thought he was one of the best Tavistock colts in the sale.
“He’s got a lovely family and he’s going to be included in the breeding syndicate.
“They’re not making any more of these Tavistock’s and he’s a top quality colt that we thought we must have.”
