Lot 495 chestnut filly Almanzor – Lady Royale (Captain Rio) $300,000 (Hallmark Stud)
By one of the best credentialed stallions to shuttle to New Zealand in the last decade, Almanzor (Wotton Bassett) was European Champion Three-Year-Old and claimed the same titles in Ireland and France.
“We’re excited about the progeny of Almanzor,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM. “He was a champion racehorse, with a strong pedigree, and we’ve been impressed with his first yearlings on offer at Karaka. And, the three that sold a week earlier at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast averaged over $500,000.”
Her dam Lady Royale was a beautiful filly that impressed winning over 1200m and 1400m, including the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m).
“She’s a real running sort of Almanzor, out of stakes winning two-year-old filly, going back to a Rory’s Jester mare that was a winner at two.” Ellis said. “There is plenty of speed in the family.
“She’s very athletic, precocious, strong, moves well, and we think she can be up and trialling in the spring. Hopefully, she becomes the type of filly we can target the Karaka Million with.”
The filly carries a cross through her sire lines of high-quality stallion Nureyev, sire of 135 stakes winners and adding a class factor to any pedigree.
