Lot 535 chestnut filly Almanzor – Miraculous Miss (Exceed and Excel) $380,000 (draft: Curraghmore Stud)
By one of the best credentialed stallions to shuttle to New Zealand in the last decade, Almanzor (Wotton Bassett) was European Champion Three-Year-Old and claimed the same titles in Ireland and France.
“We’re excited about the progeny of Almanzor,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis CNZM. “He was a champion racehorse, with a strong pedigree, and we’ve been impressed with his first yearlings on offer at Karaka. And, the three that sold a week earlier at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast averaged over $500,000.”
Dam Miraculous Miss (Exceed and Excel) was a two-year-old winner in Australia, stakes placed, and as a young mare she is already the producer of two horses, Avisto (Tavistock) and Celtic Tiger (O’Reilly), that have won four stakes races between them.
Currently fourth on the Australian General Sires List, Exceed and Excel remains one of the best stallions in Australia, closing in on 2000 winners worldwide and over 180 stakes winners, including more than 30 juvenile Group winners, and over 45 stakes winners as a top-class broodmare sire.
It has been said before that Exceed and Excel is “uniquely suited to the demands of Australasian racing”.
Second dam Galway Lass, is by Melbourne Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m) siring stallion Rhythm, and in turn the third dam is by all-conquering sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram).
“She is an absolutely beautiful filly with great two-year-old potential, and a Karaka Million sort,” Ellis said.
“She is very athletic, walks well, and she’s a filly we really wanted to have. She’s the type to be one of the more precious progeny we’ve bought by Almanzor.”
