Lot 1459 ch c Zoustar – Mumtaazah (Al Samer) (Widden Stud)
Fifth leading sire (winners) in a highly competitive General Sires’ List this season in Australia, Zoustar (Northern Meteor) won six of his nine starts, including two Group Ones and a Group Two.
He became one of the most sought-after stallions in Australia, following the premature demise of his sire Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago), who had been Champion First Season Sire, and Zoustar sired a $1m yearling filly from his first crop.
Standing at Widden Stud, Zoustar is the reigning Champion First & Second Season Sire and Champion Australian 3YO Sire. He is the sire of multiple Group One winning sprinter Sunlight, who was sold for $4.2m by Widden as broodmare.
He has also produced two Sires’ Produce Stakes winning colts, Lean Mean Machine and Lightsaber, along with Group Two winning colt Zousain, who added three Group One seconds.
The Zoustar/Al Samer cross has already proved successful with six-time winner Madam Rouge, which carries the influence of champion sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) as the dam sire of Zoustar and the sire of Al Samer.
It is a family with strong New Zealand ties, as third dam Who’s That Lady (Star Way) left La Bella Dama (Desert Sun), an Eight Carat Classic (Gr. 2, 1600m) and Royal Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m) winner that went on to win the Mackinnon Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) at Flemington. In turn, she left six individual winners of 28 races and over NZ$2.5m prize money.
“In our opinion, he was one of the best colts in the sale,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis. “He’s beautifully balanced, has great shape and scope, and is the type to run early.
“We think he has the makings of a Christmas two-year-old and one to train on at three as a Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) sort.
“He has plenty of natural strength, moves really well, and we loved him. Thinking we had to pay more to secure him, we were thrilled to get him at the price.
“Zoustar is a wonderful stallion and this colt’s dam has had one to the races who is already the winner of four races, and this colt has plenty big upside. He oozes quality, walks well and fluidly and has a very willing attitude.”
