Lot 400 chestnut filly Xtravagant – Infra Dig (Exceed and Excel) $70,000 (draft: Newhaven Park)
A filly from the second crop by Xtravagant (Pentire), trained by Te Akau to win the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) in breathtaking fashion by eight and a half lengths. He ran the mile in a staggering 1:33.59, last 600m in 33.04, to establish a new race record and became the fifth of six 2000 Guineas winners for Te Akau. He now stands at Newhaven Park, N.S.W., in Australia.
Owned by the 2014 Te Akau Breeding Syndicate, Xtravagant was purchased as a yearling by David Ellis for $375,000 at the 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale, from the draft of Rich Hill Stud.
Xtravagant is from an unraced Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare, Axiom, who has also left multiple Group 1 placed stallion He’s Remarkable (Pentire), and the grand-dam is multiple stakes performer Arletty (Centaine). She won eight of her twenty-nine starts, including the Wilkinson Mile (Gr. 3, 1600m) and Ra Ora Stakes (Gr. 3, 2000m) at Ellerslie, the Villiers Stakes (Gr. 2, 1600m) at Randwick, and the Queen of the Turf (Gr. 2, 1500m) at Rosehill.
The dam of the filly, Infra Dig, was expected to win on debut as a two-year-old over 1100 metres and duly obliged. By a son of breed-shaping stallion Danehill, Australian Champion Sire Exceed and Excel began early on as a sire of sires, proving commercial in both hemispheres, and more recently has made a name for himself as a broodmare sire, especially in the Southern Hemisphere: New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.
Currently fourth on the Australian General Sires List, Exceed and Excel remains one of the best stallions in Australia, closing in on 2000 winners worldwide and over 180 stakes winners, including more than 30 juvenile Group winners, and over 45 stakes winners as a top-class broodmare sire.
It has been said before that Exceed and Excel is “uniquely suited to the demands of Australasian racing”.
