Ready To Run 19 – Lot 305 Headwater (AUS) – Casta la Cat (AUS), Bay Filly

Lot 305 b f Headwater – Casta La Cat (Tale of the Cat) $135,000 (draft: Kilmore Farm)

Karyn actually purchased this exciting filly – from the first crop of speed sire Headwater, a beautifully bred stallion by Australian Champion Sire Exceed and Excel, out of Oakleigh Plate (Gr. 1, 1100m) winner River Dove (Hurricane Sky).

Headwater was an early favourite for the Golden Slipper (Gr. 1, 1200m) after winning on debut, following with the Silver Slipper (Gr. 2, 1100m), and third in the Todman Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m).

With his first crop, Headwater topped the first season sire aggregates at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The filly has terrific sires on her dam side. Tale of the Cat was Champion 2YO Sire in U.S.A, became a Champion Freshman Sire in New Zealand, and doing the job worldwide as a broodmare sire.

Her next two sires: Flying Spur has really made his mark and a fixture in the top 10 broodmare sires in Australia, while Woodman has made an enormous impact with his daughters leaving over 200 stakes winners.

“This is a really nicely put together filly and a natural runner,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis. “She breezed up well and by an exciting young Australian stallion, by a Champion Sire (Exceed and Excel), and his first crop progeny have been highly sought after at Australian sales.

“Headwater was a very good juvenile racehorse and has certainly made a great start at stud.”

The filly carries a lovely cross of Danehill, the greatest sire of stakes winners in the world (349), through her sire line, as the sire of Exceed and Excel, and the dam line, as the sire of Flying Spur.

“There is plenty of speed in her pedigree and she looks a filly that can race as a two-year-old, before preparing for early season fillies races at three.”
