ASTURIA

Asturia was named after 'The Princess of Asturias' which is the official title held by the heir presumptive or heir apparent to the throne of Spain, currently Leonor (her stablename too).

With the royal connection in mind, it was appropriate that this filly, purchased by Sir David Ellis from Karaka's Book 1 sale for $135,000, very quickly displayed her regal presence.

A stylish winner on debut at Ellerslie over 1400m, against her own age but more experienced horses, the Almanzor filly showed her high promise and potential.  Despite being severely hampered at the start, it was a no-panic ride by Michael McNab to hunt down the fence and cement an eye-catching victory in early September 2026.

The strength of that win saw the 3YO head to Hastings later in September to take on the boys in the $175,000 Group 2 The Foxes at Novara Park Hawkes Bay Guineas 3YO SW 1400m. Although awkwardly away for Michael McNab, she rallied professionally to finish off strongly, going down by under a length.

At her third start, Asturia was back to Ellerslie, the scene of her debut victory, in October 2026 for the $175,000 Group 2 Windsor Park Stud Soliloquy Stakes 3YO Fillies SW over 1400m. Despite a tricky draw, it was again the patient and intelligent ride by Michael McNab that saw her settle back past midfield and she unwound in impressive fashion down the straight to reel in the leaders and score comfortably by one length.

As a result, Asturia was installed as the $1.90 favourite for the Group 1 Barneswood Farm NZ 1000 Guineas, as Te Akau attempts to win the iconic race for the eighth time.

Asturia is raced by the Te Akau Legacy of Love Racing Partnership (Mgr: Lady Karyn Ellis) and has raced three times for two wins and a second placing, earning $175,125 in prize money to date.
