DISCRETION RULES

One of the final yearlings to sell in his year, Discretion Rules struck black type victory as a two year old at his fourth career start.

The son of Alabama Express was sent straight to the South Island to commence his racing career by Te Akau trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson. Feeling the two year old would grow and mature mentally by the experience, the gelding soon showed the training team's views were spot on.

Discretion Rules debuted for third at the Otago meeting over 820m in early March 2024.  The race was won by his stablemate Nucleozor, who would become something of his nemesis in the immediate future.

Later in March 2024, the pair squared off again at Riccarton Park over 1000m.  Not much went his way early in proceedings, but he showed plenty of ticker to finish second, albeit by 3.3 lengths to Nucleozor.

In early April 2024, it was game day again as both geldings did battle for black type honours in the $80,000 Listed Riccarton Park Welcome Stakes 2YO SW over 1000m.   In the hands of Ashvin Goindasamy, he was gallant in defeat when finishing runner up again to his talented and unbeaten stablemate.

On 4 May 2024, Discretion Rules was to have his well deserved 'day in the sun' back at Riccarton Park.  This time with Te Akau apprentice Niranjan Parmar engaged, he was sent out favourite for the $80,000 Listed Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes 2YO SW 1200m.

With no Nucleozor, but other talented juveniles to contend with, he challenged at the 400m mark, led and kicked clear to win by half a length over North island challenger Ziggy Stardust, with Te Akau stablemate Colonel Warden a neck behind in third place.

In winning the Listed Champagne Stakes, Discretion Rules also became the first stakes' winner for his sire Alabama Express.

Discretion Rules was purchased by David Ellis CNZM from the Karaka Yearling Sale Book 1 and is raced by the Te Akau Non-Stop Express Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM).  He has raced four times for his stakes' win and three placings, earning $71,800.
