Originally from County Kildare, Ireland, Tom Murphy brings extensive international experience across racing, breeding, bloodstock sales and young horse development to his role as Te Akau Racing Manager.
Tom grew up immersed in the thoroughbred industry on his family’s farm, where his parents broke in and pre-trained young horses while also preparing a small team of racehorses. He began working professionally with horses at just 17 and has since gained valuable experience throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Alongside his practical horsemanship, Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics from the National University of Ireland Galway and is a graduate of the Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Management Course. His international experience includes working at the Darley Japan Pre-Training Centre, riding work for Tom Clover Racing in the United Kingdom and serving as Assistant Foreperson for John O’Donoghue Racing in Ireland.
Tom has also held Yearling Manager positions with Tinnakill House Stud in Ireland and Sledmere Stud in Australia, overseeing the preparation of yearlings for major sales including Magic Millions, Inglis Classic and Inglis Easter. His extensive sales experience has fostered a particular passion for bloodstock and the identification and development of young horses.
Since joining Te Akau, Tom has become an integral member of the team and most recently served as Foreman overseeing the Te Akau Colt Barn. In August 2026, he was appointed Racing Manager (NZ), working closely with our owners, trainers and wider team across the operation. His horsemanship, professionalism and broad industry knowledge make him a highly valued member of Te Akau’s senior team.
