Te Akau Stable Star Of The Month – April

Te Akau Stable Star Of The Month – April goes to On the Bubbles!

The winner of four from six at the completion of an outstanding juvenile season, On the Bubbles (2 g Brazen Beau – More Bubbles, by Sebring) provided two particularly outstanding highlights this year.

One of only two in the stable to win four times as a two-year-old, On the Bubbles became Te Akau’s (and trainer Jamie Richards) fifth consecutive Karaka Million 2YO winner at Ellerslie, capping a hat-trick of wins in the process under rider Johnathan Parkes.

On The Bubbles – affectionately known as “Boli” – followed in the Karaka 2YO Million footsteps of current dual Horse of the Year and national Group One record-holder (14) Melody Belle (Commands) who won in 2017; nine-time Group One winner Avantage (Fastnet Rock) in 2018 – both named Champion Two-Year-Old – triple Australian Group One winner Probabeel (Savabeel) in 2019, and another Champion Two-Year-Old, Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel), last year. He has had a very large group of followers ‘On The Bubbles’ during his campaign with his owners getting right into the spirit of backing him alongside friends and families by collectively joining to have over 150 caps produced and worn with pride on and off the track.

On the Bubbles signalled his readiness for the $1m feature with a scintillating performance on the course a fortnight earlier, and despite drawing widest (14), he reached the lead a furlong out before drawing clear to win by one and three-quarter lengths. In addition, he headed a first four home for the stable in the 2021 Karaka 2YO Million.

After bowing twice to stable-mate Sword of State (Snitzel), who also won four times, On the Bubbles put icing on the season’s cake with victory in the $225,000 Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes over 1400m at Awapuni. In front from the outset and travelling like a winner throughout, he registered the fourth consecutive win in the race for Te Akau.

In securing the quadrella, On the Bubbles followed Manawatu Sires’ wins by Melody Belle in 2017, Avantage 2018, and Yourdeel 2019 – all three named Champion Two-Year-Old. Previously, Te Akau had won the race with Kindacross  and Maroofity (also Champion Two Year Old).

On the Bubbles notched the 21st two-year-old win (strike rate 2.2) this season for Jamie Richards, who recorded his 45th Group One win as a trainer.

By a good sire of two-year-olds in Australia, On the Bubbles was purchased for $90,000 by David Ellis CNZM at the 2020 Karaka Book 1 Sale, from the draft of Leanach Lodge. Owned by Te Akau Splash of Dom Racing Partnership (Mgr: Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM), he has earned $750,000 in prize money.

Tough and talented, On the Bubbles overcame wide draws to win his first three starts in succession. The manner of his lead-up Karaka Million win prompted Ellis to say: “That’s definitely as good a win as I’ve seen by any two-year-old this season. You just don’t see horses sit three and four wide and win pulling away like that”.

He went out on a great note in the Sires’, still powerful at the line while getting away by three lengths, and shapes as a force to be reckoned with next season in the three-year-old classics.
