Karaka Yearling Sales 2025
Lot 120 bay colt Savabeel – Miss Scandinavia (Smart Missile) - draft: Hallmark Stud
The colt is by Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m) winning three-year-old and nine-time Champion Sire Savabeel, who serves so well the trilogy of breed shaping stallions in New Zealand: Savabeel – Zabeel – Sir Tristram.
No other buyer (David Ellis) or stable (Te Akau Racing) has had more success with the progeny of Savabeel. Ellis has selected, bought, and Te Akau has trained more Group One winning and Group winning progeny by Savabeel than anyone else.
The list includes Group One winners now at stud: Embellish, Cool Aza Beel, and Noverre, and other Group One winners: Probabeel (4), a dual NZ Horse of the Year, Prise De Fer, Amarelinha (NZB Filly of the Year), Hall Of Fame, Sword Of Osman, Skew Wiff, The Perfect Pink, and a host of other stakes winners by this remarkable sire.
Ellis not only purchased dam Miss Scandinavia as a yearling in Australia, but in 2023 bought the brother to the colt, Hakkinen.
At just his second start, Hakkinen recorded a smart victory in the Rating 60 1600 metres on 20 December at Matamata, and coursing a path to the NZ Derby (Gr. 1, 2400m) he ran fastest last 600m (36.3) for fourth in the Gingernuts Salver (Listed, 2100m) on 12 January at Ellerslie.
Miss Scandinavia has an exceptional pedigree, by terrific sire Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock), a Group Two winner and Group One placed sprinter, sire of over 1300 winners.
Her grand-dam Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) was Champion 2YO & 3YO Filly in Australia, and winner of five Group One races including the Golden Slipper (1200m) and VRC Oaks (2500m). Her progeny sold for $500,000, $750,000, and $900,000, as indication of the quality.
“It’s a stunning pedigree and after buying her first foal, Hakkinen, we were very pleased to buy the brother at such a good value price,” Ellis said.
“He’s a neat type of colt that looks like he could race as a two-year-old and train on at three and older.
“He’s a classy animal, the mare has left another really nice yearling, and given what we think about the potential of Hakkinen he was great buying at 100k.”
