Karaka Yearling Sales 2025
Lot 340 bay colt Vanbrugh – Supreme (Falkirk) - draft: Windsor Park Stud
The colt is a brother to Te Akau trained Wild Night, purchased cheaply ($50,000) by David Ellis as a yearling at Karaka, who went on to become one of the best three-year-olds in New Zealand, winning the Sarten Memorial (Gr. 2, 1400m) and Uncle Remus Stakes (Listed, 1400m) amongst five wins in a row, while finishing second in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (Restricted Listed, 1600m), and third in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m).
By Champion Sire and sire of sires Encosta de Lago (Fairy King), Vanbrugh won the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) as a three-year-old, when proving one of the best of his age. The Spring Champion Stakes, a stallion making race, has been won by the likes of Savabeel (Zabeel) and Dundeel (High Chaparral). Vanbrugh also won the Gloaming Stakes (Gr. 3, 1800m) and Coongy Cup (Gr. 3, 2000m).
In addition to Wild Night, the mare has also left Eclipse Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) winner Play That Song (Showcasing), who finished second to Te Akau colt, now stallion, Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel) in the Karaka Million 2YO (Restricted Listed, 1200m).
Grand-dam Maxamore (Volksraad) won the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m), and left four-time winner and stakes placed Faxed, also by beautifully bred speed sire Falkirk (Tale of the Cat) Going back further in the family, fifth dam Brown Satin won the NZ Oaks (Gr. 1, 2400m).
“Wild Night is a really talented racehorse and it’s great to be able to buy his brother for such a good value price,” Ellis said.
“It’s a huge advantage to have already seen a pedigree cross work so well and certainly makes it easier when inspecting other progenies from the mare by the same sire.
“It’s a strong two-year-old family and we’d like to think he could race as a two-year-old, and he has the scope to train on as a three-year-old.
“Understandably, he has a very similar physique to Wild Night, and definitely has the right genetics, from a talented family with plenty of depth.”
The colt has a very cross in his bloodlines of both Mr. Prospector and Danzig, both hugely influence stallions and sires of sires.
