Karaka Yearling Sales 2025
Lot 417 bay colt Snitzel – Zayydani (Savabeel) - draft: Trelawney Stud
The colt is by four-time Champion Sire in Australia, and four-time Champion Two-Year-Old Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), one of three in the trilogy of breed shaping champion stallions in Australia, along with Danehill (Danzig), and Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), and stands at Arrowfield Stud for $247,500 + GST. Snitzel is also a sire of sires, led by Group One winners Russian Revolution, Shamus Award, Trapeze Artist, and Sword Of State, the latter purchased as a yearling by David Ellis, Champion Two-Year-Old, and now setting things alight with sales of his first crop yearlings at Magic Millions and Karaka.
The colt is the first foal out of Zayydani, by nine-time Champion Sire Savabeel (Zabeel), winner of six races from 1600m – 2100m in Australia, including the Matriarch Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m), Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m), and Gold Crowns Fillies Stakes (Listed, 2100m).
Grand-dam Ruqqaya (Van Nistelrooy) appeared to have inherited plenty of ability from her dam, Sayyida (Zabeel), when scoring impressively over 2000 metres at her third start, and in turn proved herself as a broodmare when producing Grunt.
By Champion Sire O’Reilly (Last Tycoon), Grunt was a first-class racehorse and dual Group One winner of the Australian Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m), and already proved himself as a sire with four stakes winners from his first crop.
Ruqqaya is a half-sister to five-time Group One winner and successful stallion Ocean Park (Thorn Park), who, including Grunt and Group Two winner Zayydani (Savabeel), left five individual winners of 20 races and over $3m in stakes.
It is a family that has proved itself by leaving Group One winning colts that have gone on to become successful stallions.
“He’s a magnificent looking colt, in every aspect of his conformation, from an exceptional family, and bred and prepared by the best in the business, Brent and Cherry Taylor, at Trewlawney Stud,” said David Ellis.
“The high-quality mares in the dam line have already left colts to win at the highest level, before becoming stallions, and it’s obviously a great stallion pedigree.
“We rated him the best colt in the sale and it’s a great opportunity for people to get involved in such a well-bred colt by Snitzel.
“He’s the complete package and very good value at 400k.”
Brent Taylor (Trelawney Stud) said: “He’s a lovely colt with a smooth action, a lot of quality, and an enormous amount of developmental upside. “He got great quarters in his physique, a great brain on him, and he looks a perfect type of colt for the Karaka Millions 2YO next year.
“There are sires all through the pedigree. Grunt has made a great start to his stud career, and sired two winners overnight (26th Jan.) in Hong Kong, and Ocean Park has proved himself as a Group One producing sire.
“There are actually not a lot of horses in the family, numerically, but a lot of very high-class performers from a small number of horses.
“David (Ellis) and his buying team are proven judges and I think he got a great buy.”
The colt has such influential sires in his pedigree, including immortal sire Northern Dancer, champion racehorse Storm Bird, and Champion Sires Zabeel and Sir Tristram.
