Description

Lot 573 bay filly Savabeel – Early Morning Rise (Fastnet Rock) - draft: Waikato Stud

The colt is by Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m) winning three-year-old and nine-time Champion Sire Savabeel, who serves so well the trilogy of breed shaping stallions in New Zealand: Savabeel – Zabeel – Sir Tristram.

No other buyer (David Ellis) or stable (Te Akau Racing) has had more success with the progeny of Savabeel.

Ellis has selected, bought, and Te Akau has trained more Group One winning and Group winning progeny by Savabeel than anyone else.

The list includes Group One winners now at stud: Embellish, Cool Aza Beel, and Noverre, and other Group One winners: Probabeel (4), a dual NZ Horse of the Year, Prise De Fer, Amarelinha (NZB Filly of the Year), Hall Of Fame, Sword Of Osman, Skew Wiff, The Perfect Pink, and a host of other stakes winners by this remarkable sire. Dam Early Morning Rise is a winning daughter of Fastnet Rock.

The Champion 3YO colt and Champion sprinter in Australia, Fastnet Rock was crowned Champion Sire in Australia, and remains as influential as any stallion when becoming Australian Champion Broodmare Sire last season. Fastnet Rock has sired over 300 winners as a broodmare sire and last season had 19 stakes winners to claim the Champion Broodmare Sire title.

The family is known to Te Akau through the deeds of Alert (Zabeel), Rise ‘N’ Shine (Zabeel), and Wide Awake (Savabeel), who were bought and trained by Te Akau to win eight races between them.

Grand-dam Kay’s Awake was an impressive winner during her career of six wins, at the time regarded as one of the best race mares over the past decade in New Zealand, placing twice behind multiple Group One winners Darci Brahma (Danehill) and Seachange (Cape Cross).

Kay’s Awake also proved herself at stud, leaving six individual winners of 17 races, including Australian stakes winner Rise At Dawn (Almanzor).

“It’s a family we’ve always really liked and had success with and the cross with the Sir Tristram sire line, through Zabeel and Savabeel has worked very well,” Ellis said.

“She’s a classic example of the mating and very similar to others that we’ve bought out of this family.

“She reminds us a lot of Damask Rose (Savabeel), who won the Karaka Millions 3YO (Restricted Listed, 1600m) so well the other day at Ellerslie.

“The filly is in the same mould and we can see her racing as a two-year-old, going on to be a really good three-year-old filly, and like the rest of the family they keep improving.”

The filly has a nicely balanced cross through her sire lines for immortal sire Northern Dancer.
