Description

Lot 656 brown colt Savabeel – Honor (Rip Van Winkle) - draft: Waikato Stud

The colt is by Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m) winning three-year-old and nine-time Champion Sire Savabeel, who serves so well the trilogy of breed shaping stallions in New Zealand: Savabeel – Zabeel – Sir Tristram.

No other buyer (David Ellis) or stable (Te Akau Racing) has had more success with the progeny of Savabeel. Ellis has selected, bought, and Te Akau has trained more Group One winning and Group winning progeny by Savabeel than anyone else.

The list includes Group One winners now at stud: Embellish, Cool Aza Beel, and Noverre, and other Group One winners: Probabeel (4), a dual NZ Horse of the Year, Prise De Fer, Amarelinha (NZB Filly of the Year), Hall Of Fame, Sword Of Osman, Skew Wiff, The Perfect Pink, and a host of other stakes winners by this remarkable sire.

The colt is out of a three-quarter sister to Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle), a dual Group One winner that achieved cult status.

Purchased by David Ellis at Karaka, the gifted galloper won the BCD Group Sprint (Gr. 1, 1400m) and Chipping Norton (Gr. 1, 1600m), while finishing second the Epsom Handicap (Gr. 1, 1600m), and third in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr. 1, 1500m) and Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m). Bought for $230,000, Te Akau Shark won seven from 14 and $1.5m prize money.

Grand-dam Bak Da Princess, by 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Danske (Danehill), produced Group One winner Pondarosa Miss (High Chaparral), an enormously talented mare, and multiple-Group winning Ecuador (High Chaparral).

While third dam Havitbak (Bakharoff) has been worth her weight in gold as the matriarch of the ‘Hollinshead’ family, leaving Waikato Cup (Gr. 2, 2400m) winner Bak da Chief (Chief Bearhart), the dam of Te Akau Shark.

“We love buying from this quality family, that just continues to produce Group winning racehorses,” Ellis said.

“He’s a perfectly conformed colt, really looks the part, and he’s an exciting colt to buy out of this family, especially being by Savabeel.

“He really has the makings of a 2000 Guineas colt as a three-year-old, with the pedigree to stretch out over more distance as he matures, like so many of the family has.”

The colt has a bloodline cross of legendary sire Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor), on the sire line of Savabeel and dam line of Honor.
