Enrichment Exciting

Enrichment (3 g Rock ‘N' Pop - Enhance, by Saperavi) provided Karyn Fenton-Ellis (MNZM) and daughters Lydia and Julia-Rose with a tremendous thrill on Wednesday at Pukekohe, winning the $10,000 Mount Shop Maiden 1200 metres.

Bred and owned by the trio, Enrichment is the first foal from their talented filly Enhance (Saperavi), who stylishly won her first two starts. Bred by Karyn, the dam of Enhance, Pinstinct, from the Oregon mare Oregon Express, was a winner when trained by Mark Walker and given to her when retired from racing by the late Kim Lee. Sadly Insitnct died peacefully in her paddock of natural causes earlier this year, in foal to Burgundy.

Somewhat like his mother, who
appreciated jar out of the ground, Enrichment appeared to enjoy the yield
offered on Dead5 footing and benefitted from a cosy trip under rider Cameron
Lammas.

Having registered a fourth and
second in two starts as a two-year-old and finished fourth to stable-mate Reiko
(Reliable Man) when resuming in the Maiden 1200 metres on 6 November at
Avondale, trainer Jamie Richards added visor blinkers to aid his focus.
Utilizing barrier two to secure a trailing position, Enrichment was held up
before finding room at the 200m and showed grit in a duel to get the deciding
bob.

“We've taken our time with him,
but he had pretty good form,” Richards said. “He was a little bit plain first-up,
so we gave him some time (28 days) and he's continued to go the right way. He's
probably looking for 1400m and a mile, but great to get a win for Karyn and the
girls. I'm really pleased for them and feel he is the type of horse to work
further through the grades.”

After opening at $8.50 &
$2.40 on fixed odds, Enrichment returned $10.30 & $2.40 on the tote, after
running the 1200 metres in 1:11.7.

“It was a great thrill to see Enrichment win,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis. “The family has been a good producer, Enhance showed plenty of ability in winning her first two starts and she's currently in foal to Eminent (Frankel), who was raced in Europe and Australia by Sir Peter Vela.

“Jamie (Richards) has done a great job with the horse and I think he's got a lot of improvement in him yet. He's always thought the ability was there and it's a tremendous thrill for Karyn, Lydia, and Julia-Rose, the three most demanding owners I've got in the stable (laugh). So, it was a relief to see him win and he could finish up being a runner in the New Zealand Derby.”

Following up on recent purchases at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale, Ellis said: “We've had new owners here for lunch yesterday and been busy selling shares in the horses. They've proved very popular and they've settled in beautifully here at the farm.

“We still have shares in a couple
of nice horses and twenty percent left in the stallion syndicate, but by the
weekend I think all the shares should just about be gone.”

Enrichment is by Te Akau trained 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) winner Rock ‘N' Pop (Fastnet Rock) and his dam is also a half-sister to stable-mate Vino Bella (Burgundy), bred by Karyn, while an earlier foal she raced with Lydia, The Looker (Handsome Ransom), was a consistent performer that notched a victory.

Interestingly, Pinstinct is out
of Oregon mare Oregon Express and the same cross gave rise to the best horse
sired by Champion stallion Pins, Ambitious Dragon, who accumulated seven Group
One wins in a total of 13, the equivalent of NZ$10.9 million in prize money,
and twice named Hong Kong Horse of the Year.

Enrichment was strapped by Anna Jones.
