Polar Power

Lightly raced Polarity, a striking 5 year old grey by No Excuse Needed from Peter and Phillip Vela's mare Affirmed Lane, won his second race today in the Crombie Lockwood 2200m at Avondale. Avondale was rated a Slow9 today after a week of sunshine and no rain.

Settled five lengths off the leader early in the going by Te Akau stable jockey Matthew Cameron, Polarity began his move on the leaders at the 800m mark. "Hugo" as we know him and Matt were locked in a battle with Pherazardo and Danielle Johnson from the 600m and horse and rider showed true grit to prevail as the winners by a short neck with 3.5 lengths back to third.

The win is his second from 16 starts for the Te Akau Polarity Syndicate, managed by David Ellis.

"I'm really pleased for the owners as they have been very patient with this horse," said trainer Jason Bridgman.

"He should probably have more wins under his belt if not for unsuitable track conditions and I am happy that he rewarded their patience today. As shown in his last start at Waverley, just put a line through his heavy track form. He was fit with three runs under his belt and the track came up perfect for him today."

"Matt is a nice fit for Hugo and got the job done for him today. He never gave up during the fight in the straight and that certainly helped the result. We've also changed his training and routine by schooling him. Tommy Hazlett rides him and he quickly showed enough talent over jumps to take him to a hurdle trial  and that woke him up a bit."

Polarity was purchased by David Ellis for $210,000 out of the 2009 NZB Premier Sale from the draft of Pencarrow Stud. His older half brother by Fastnet Rock races for Te Akau in Singapore and under Mark Walker's guidance,  Affirmation has amassed over $250,000 in stakes.

Matthew Cameron commented: "he did it on his ear and didn't blow too hard after the race. He was fit and ready and the track was spot on for him today."

The win took Matt's tally for the season to within two wins of Opie Bosson, leader of the Jockeys' Premiership. Matthew then went on to win the next two races on the card to tie with Opie with just over a week left in the 2012-13 season.
