Te Akau: Australasian Record

Electric atmosphere experience as Black Caviar's half brother sells for A$5 million.

It was incredible to be part of history today as Black Caviar and All Too Hard's half brother by Redoute's Choice smashed existing Australasian sales' records as he fetched $5 million.

It was obvious that his time was approaching as people streamed into the sales' arena, with barely standing room remaining.  They were rewarded with a Fastnet Rock half brother to Royal Ascot Group 1 winner Starspangledbannert just a few lots before the star colt also being much sought after and making A$2.5 million for a Chinese syndicate.

A hushed silence as all eyes turned to the entry gate to the ring while everyone waited for the young horse to appear - although not scripted, it could well have been - he took a minute or so to make his entrance, much to the delight of all when he finally stepped in.  He presented as a very relaxed and well grown colt.

Bidding started at A$2 million and escalated quickly to A$5 million when he was knocked down to the same purchaser, BC3 Thoroughbreds, who bought his full sister last year.  The underbidder was believed to be Adam Sangster.  The colt had been inspected 132 times in recent days we are told.

The sale eclisped the previous Australasian record of $3.6 million paid for a Zabeel colt at Karaka.  He was later named Don Eduardo and won the Group 1 AJC Derby.

We have our eye on a beautiful colt who we hope to buy and bring back to New Zealand - he is a real beauty and both David and oiur vet Doug Black rate him very highly indeed.  Watch this space - if we do manage to secure him (budget dependent) we will be offering shares in him - read about it first on our website!
