Description

Lot 217 bay filly Savabeel – Mawzoona (Fastnet Rock) $240,000 (Waikato Stud)

The eight-time Champion Sire in New Zealand, Savabeel is represented by over 900 individual winners, including 137 stakes winners which surpassed grand-sire Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) while closing in on his sire Zabeel (Sir Tristram).

David Ellis has an incredible record buying progeny by Savabeel (Zabeel), including dual Horse of the Year Probabeel, winner of four Group Ones in Australia.

Savabeel provided a rare double when Te Akau trained Noverre (Savabeel) won the 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1,1600m) and The Perfect Pink (Savabeel) won the 1000 Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) in 2021, while Savabeel success stories for the stable include other Group One winners Amarelinha, Hall of Fame, Savy Yong Blonk, Sword of Osman, Shillelagh, Cool Aza Beel, Embellish, Prise De Fer, I Wish I Win, and Skew Wiff, as well as group winners: Splurge, Gold Fever, Aotea Lad, Synchronize, Brando, and Fashion Shoot, while his sire sons include Embellish, Cool Aza Beel, and Noverre.

The filly is out of Mawzoona, a dual winner over 1200 metres in Australia, by Champion Sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill), whose mares have crossed with Savabeel to leave six stakes winners.

Notably, the filly is from the family of Australian Horse of the Year Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), winner of all 25 starts including 15 Group One, Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and stallion All Too Hard (Casino Prince), and promising new sire Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon).

Te Akau has experience with the family, having trained Glad (Pins), a daughter of grand-dam Mchappy (Rory’s Jester), who included the Anniversary Handicap (Gr. 3, 1600m) among four victories.

Mchappy was a two-year-old winner over 1000 metres in Australia, while the unraced Helsinge (Desert Sun), from her second dam Song of Norway (Vain) is the dam of champion mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit).

“It’s a very speedy family, with the likes of Black Caviar, Scandinavia (Snippets) and Magnus (Flying Spur,” Ellis said.

“She’s a lovely, natural, sort of filly and certainly has plenty of strength.”

Through her dam lines, the filly carries a simple cross of immortal sire Northern Dancer.
